Alexa turns on/off smart plug but says it isn't responding

I have the u-tec smart plug and it worked great with my echo for a few months, but now it responds with the device isn’t responding, even though the plug still does the command. It seems as though there is an issue with the plug reporting back that it’s state has changed. Even though the Alexa app shows the state has changed.
