Extremely short battery life on Latch 5 NFC and no low battery notification

Installed my Latch NFC without problems and it functioned perfectly until around 2 weeks after installation the entire unit went dead, creating considerable inconvenience. It was getting little use (maybe 3 accesses per day, some days no access at all). Unit showed battery level as “high” in the app right up until it died. No notification or warning from the app. Batteries were new Energiser MaxPlus. Surely this is not normal drainage? What sort of battery life are others getting?
